What Is MicroTESE Procedure
MicroTESE stands for Microsurgical Testicular Sperm Extraction. It is an advanced and highly specialized procedure used to retrieve sperm from men with non-obstructive azoospermia—a condition where the testes do not produce enough sperm to appear in the semen. Unlike conventional TESE, MicroTESE uses an operating microscope to precisely identify and extract sperm-producing tubules. This increases the likelihood of finding viable sperm, especially in men with very limited sperm production, while minimizing damage to the testicular tissue.
Who Needs MicroTESE and Why
MicroTESE is recommended for men who have no sperm in their ejaculate due to testicular failure or severely impaired spermatogenesis. It may be beneficial for patients with genetic conditions, prior chemotherapy or radiation, or unsuccessful sperm retrieval through standard TESE. This procedure is often the last option for couples wishing to use the male partner’s sperm for IVF with ICSI. MicroTESE offers improved outcomes because it targets only the most promising tissue areas, reducing unnecessary removal of healthy testicular cells.
How MicroTESE Is Performed
The MicroTESE procedure is carried out under general anesthesia in a surgical setting. A small incision is made in the scrotum, and an operating microscope is used to magnify and inspect the seminiferous tubules. Tissue samples showing the highest sperm production potential are carefully extracted and examined in the lab for live sperm. The sperm retrieved can be used immediately or cryopreserved for future use. Recovery time is generally short, with minor discomfort. MicroTESE is a safe, efficient, and fertility-saving option for men with severe male infertility.
